Indoor Dial Thermometer
This dial thermometer is designed for indoor use only and provides an accurate measurement of air temperature in the immediate vicinity of the instrument's location.
Dial-type thermometers with pointer indicators are operated by sensitive bi-metal hairspring mechanisms that respond to air temperature changes. Each mechanism has been pre-adjusted at the factory and should not need any further calibration.
Please position this thermometer in a location within the home or office that represents an average temperature. Avoid locations next to drafts, ovens, air conditioners, or heaters.
As with all instruments, please permit a stabilizing period of 24-48 hours once the instrument is located before determining whether the instrument is operating correctly.
Dial Barometer
The ability of the barometer to indicate changes in atmospheric pressure makes it a useful instrument in weather forecasting.
The normal, average sea-level pressure is about 29.92 inches, which means the barometer's needle will rest near 30. Pressures seldom increase or decrease 1 inch above or below the 30-inch mark unless weather conditions are extreme.
Generally, low or decreasing barometric pressure means cloudy, unsettled or wet weather, and high pressure or increasing pressure means calm and clear weather.
To ensure accurate readings from your barometer, please keep the following in mind:
- Locate the barometer where it will remain basically undisturbed.
- Check with your local TV/radio/newspaper for the exact local barometric pressure. Calibrate your barometer only during a period of fair weather, not during stormy weather.
- With a small screwdriver, turn the adjusting screw on the back of the movement until the indicator hand points to the reading on the dial that corresponds to your known local barometric pressure. Your barometer will operate from sea level up to 7000 feet with reliable accuracy after the initial calibration, and no further adjustment should be required unless the barometer is moved to a new geographic location.
- Now place the brass pointer attached to the glass in a position directly over the pressure indicator hand. The brass pointer is intended as a reference that will allow you to determine direction/distance the pressure indicator has moved since your last reading.
- Barometric reading should be taken daily.
- Remember that rate of change is a important as amount of change in determining weather changes. You may want to take multiple barometric readings each day during periods of unstable weather conditions.
- Lightly tap the glass near the center brass knob with your fingers before taking barometric reading. This light tap will overcome any friction that may affect accurate readings, especially during periods of slow atmospheric changes.
